about

"A tale of control and power, set to a perfect pop-song; as introductions go, Goddess is a hugely impressive one" For the Rabbits on 'Goddess'

"Tender and insightful and awash with old school synths and a beautiful voice" Steve Lamacq

Alice Hubble is the new solo project of Alice Hubley (Mass Datura, Cosines, Arthur and Martha), and the product of one lady locked at home with her collection of synthesisers.

The album 'Polarlichter' was born out of a desire to work on a project without constraints, to move away from the traditional song writing process and to experiment with the form. Inspired by the 70’s recordings by Tangerine Dream, Ashra and Mike Oldfield (particularly the records he made with his sister Sally), Alice wanted to take a more delicate approach; a distinctly feminine take on often pompous 70’s progressive synth sound. Other inspirations include Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, Lee Hazlewood’s Swedish recordings and 80’s American synth pop band The Book of Love.

Constructing and sketching many of its riffs on her iPad during monotonous train journeys throughout the country. Alice built up her fragmentary ideas using vintage synthesisers and a mellotron creating something majestic, and sweeping. The album offers a soundscape of pastoral solace, far removed the urban sprawl in which it was conceived.

As a form of musical escapism, many of the recordings are inspired by far off places; Ruby Falls in Chatanooga, USA, Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies and the Atlantis Palm hotel in Dubai. Other inspiration was drawn by interpersonal interactions and Arthur C Clarke’s Childhood’s End.

‘Polarlichter’ was recorded using her vast array of analogue synthesisers at Alice’s home in north London. The recordings were completed and mixed at Big Jelly Studios in Ramsgate (whose clients include Metronomy, Stealing Sheep, Girl Ray) and co-produced by Mikey Collins (Allo Darlin), who contributed drums and guitar to the recordings.

Having recently supported Damo Suzuki she will be playing a number of shows in support of its release.

Track Name: Goddess
Fearless daring, beyond approachable
And her smile breaks the earth
She’s the beauty, ethereal she glows
She’s the goddess of your world

The sensations, the rush of blood you have
At her presence, confirm your feelings
She’s the one, the one you’re worshipping
Next to her, you’re merely nothing

You consume her alabaster skin
You consume and you take everything
Nothing left, cause you took everything
And she’s left with all of nothing

You can take and you will take
Cause it makes you feel great
She’s not real, she can’t feel
She’s the idol that you break

And it all comes to you one day
Kaleidoscope it turns to grey
Demagnetised she walks away

It all comes to you that day
Your destruction settled in
She’s not a moon in your orbit
And she’s not your girl
Track Name: We Are Still Alone
You can say what you want to say,
A past resolve reflects the day,
Conflicting thoughts come into play,
This is clearly not the answer,

We both did some things, we cannot change
Dancing around each other
You can think, that this will solve our lives
Unchanging fate dissolves the sides

Find our way through mystery
Taking pauses for clarity
We both did some things, that we cannot change
Unable to see each other

The days and years they go like clockwork
Anniversaries loom and they pass us
The passing of time will heal us
But we are still alone

I couldn’t find the way to make it better
I couldn’t find the way to make you better
I couldn’t find the way to make me better
I couldn’t find the way to make things right

I couldn’t find the way to make it better
I couldn’t find the way to make you better
I couldn’t find the way to make me better
But I’m still resigned to try to make things right
Track Name: Kick The Habit
So here I am on the run
Towards another one
There’s something more than what he has given me
I feel I’m giving in,
Another higher being
Brings me more than what he’s offering

Consult the oracle
Am I’m tempting fate
Following a different path than
What I thought was right, all I want is to open up my eyes
I couldn’t find the divine enlightenment anymore
I’m beyond submission
The higher being don’t give me feelings anymore
Found another passion

I kicked the habit my old world it just brings me down

The Priestess disapproving
My affections moving
Disillusioned with what the convent brings
He’ll show me how,
Relinquish my vow,
Submission never felt this good

Temptation’s seeping in
Convincing me that I should try to open up my mind
With another guy
Than the one of the cloth with leather on his thighs
I couldn’t find the divine enlightenment anymore
I’m beyond submission
The higher being don’t give me feelings anymore
Found another passion
I kicked the habit my old world it just brings me down
Track Name: Still Polarlichter
Take your shoes off lie down here and be still, and be still
Forget the world, lie down here and be still, and be still

Stay here with me, lie down here and be still, and be still
Just let things be, lie down here and be still, and be still

Can’t hear your screams, quiet down and be still, and be still
You can’t leave me, lying here and so still, and so still
